STUDENTS OF the 1965/1970 year group of Asanteman Senior High School in Kumasi have cut the sod for the construction of two mechanised boreholes and two water storage facilities for the school.

The sod-cutting ceremony for the facilities which are estimated at GH¢30,000 formed part of the group’s Golden Jubilee celebration. They are expected to be completed in one week.

The head of the group in Kumasi, Mr. Abraham Kwaku Bonsu, said their benevolent gesture was to support and show appreciation for what they have been able to achieve after going through the school.

“As part of our 50 years of leaving this school, thus the Golden Jubilee of our departure, we thought it will be very prudent to come back to our alma mater, and identify areas of need where our resources will be able to support,” he disclosed.

He said the group initially decided to stage sporting competitions amongst the various houses, but after meeting the headmaster they realised that the most pressing need of the school was water.

He commended other members of the year group both home and abroad for their support and financial contributions toward the construction of the projects.

Mr. Kwaku Bonsu, who is also a former secretary of the Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), said the construction of the boreholes would not be the end of their support.

He gave the assurance that they would continue to provide everything within their means to motivate the students to discover their talents.

He called on old students of the school to emulate their example, insisting that for the school to remain relevant there was the need for old students to be at the centre and play a key role in achieving excellence.

The 1970 batch of Nananom, as students of the school are known, pledged more support for the institution which has made them who they are today.

He encouraged the beneficiaries of the project to take good care of it and cultivate good maintenance culture.

On his part, Nathaniel Antwi Asamoah, the Headmaster of the Asanteman Senior High School, commended the group for the support and assured them of good maintenance.

Mariam Yahaya, the Assistant Girls’ Prefect of the school, on behalf of the school, thanked the 1970 year group for the project and said it would give them enough time for their studies as the project would limit the long hours they usually spend in search for water.
